Sherwood Heights Track and Field Meet

Dear Sherwood Heights families,

Our school Track and Field meet will be held on Thursday, May 9, 2024. We will be transporting all of our students to Strathcona Athletic Park from Sherwood Heights in the morning and returning to Sherwood Heights at the end of the day for regular bussing and dismissal. There will be no classes or activities scheduled at Sherwood Heights this day. Students are expected to attend and take part in the track meet, to meet their curriculum requirements for the physical education program.

Parents are asked to give a note to your student’s Physical Education teacher or contact the school at 780-467-5930 with regards to any circumstances (e.g., Illness or injury) preventing your student from competing at the school track meet. Students are expected to attend the full day and may not leave the grounds, as this is designated as a closed campus event for our students. Yellow busses will leave first thing in the morning from Sherwood Heights to SAP for the day. The busses will then bring the students back to Sherwood Heights at the end of the day.  If any student needs to leave early from the Track Meet, guardians must be there in person to sign them out at the Meet Results Room. This building is located just beside the bleachers in the changeroom building at SAP.

Students are reminded that this is a regular school day, but in a different location. The same guidelines for conduct, behavior and attendance are in effect.

Physical Education classes are preparing students to take part in this action-packed day, with an emphasis on giving each event your best effort. Students are required to choose a minimum of THREE events with one being a running event. Students sign up in their Physical Education classes. Students will be required to complete a self-evaluation assessing their participation on track and field day.

The events students will have the opportunity to compete in are:

Track: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1200m, 4x100 relay (by class)
Field: long jump, triple jump, high jump, shotput, discus, javelin

On the morning of May 9, all students will meet their homeroom teacher for attendance in the gym at Sherwood Heights by no later than 8:40 a.m. Attendance is taken again at the end of the day by homeroom teachers, this time in the soccer field in the middle of the track. Students will then board busses back to Sherwood Heights where they will be dismissed once the final bell rings.

Students may bring Air Pods, iPods and cell phones, but at their own risk. Students will not be able to compete while listening to any sort of music device. Tents/tarps etc. are not permitted at the track.

We recommend that students dress appropriately for the weather. It is always better to bring more clothing than not have enough. Over prepare! Students can bring a blanket or sleeping bag to stay warm if necessary. If it is hot, sunscreen and a hat are strongly recommended to help prevent heat stroke. Have a water bottle, juice, or Gatorade to stay hydrated. Students will be eating lunch at SAP, and they may bring their own lunch or purchase food items from the concession. While the concession will be provided at the meet, please do not rely on the concession as your only source of food for the day. Bring a healthy bag lunch or snacks with you, as well as enough water to last the day.

In case of inclement weather, we will have a regular day at school. Radio stations will carry a public service announcement and a School Messenger will be sent out by 6:00 a.m. if the meet is cancelled.

Students showing a high level of skill will qualify for the school track team. The school team will compete during the day on Tuesday, May 28 against other EIPS schools at Strathcona Athletic Park (SAP). This is a district track and field meet. We have included both our school and district meet dates on the parent Permission Click form to simplify things. We will hold an assembly for all students who qualify for the EIPS meet. We will inform all parents of the students invited to compete at the division meet on May 28 by School Messenger. Once again, please note that not all students go on to compete at the district meet – only those who qualify.

Permission Click forms were sent via email on April 24, 2024.

Once again, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
